Twitter and Tweets – What You’re Missing Out On
Posted by Tim Roenicke on August 08, 2010 in Social Media, TwitterTwitter is one of those diamonds in the rough. It’s something that, if you haven’t, you should take a closer look into. Facebook is great for communicating with friends, co-workers, family, and is primarily people you know. That is unless you’re a friend whore and you confirm anyone that sends you a friend request…We’ll get to Facebook security in another post. Anyway, back on track. Think of Twitter as the new socially slick “mingling spot”.
I’m no tweeting guru by any stretch of the imagination, however, I have found some major bonuses to using Twitter aside from the obvious following of friends, a few famous people, and my status updates. According to Internet World Stats the internet houses a mere 2 billion users, Twitter is 10% of that body with ~200 million users. Thats a ton of cool and interesting people you could chat up and connect with.
Network, Network, and Network!! You can use twitters search functionality to find conversations that interest you. You can then tweet back to those users, using the @username short-codes in your message,
without even adding them to a friends list. The conversation builds, and you can then decided if you want to “follow” this persons tweets on a regular basis or not. You may thing this opens the door for mounds of spam, however, I’ve yet to really have issues in that department.
Another major perk to Twitter is the response! Have you ever had a question, comment, or suggestion that you wanted to get across to a company? You would be absolutely amazed at how many companies will get back with you if you Tweet them, as opposed to email. Twitter is a social space, and companies who take it seriously will not only be on Twitter but will also have people dedicated to checking up on their feeds. In my experience the success has been incredible and the response time is quick.
If nothing else Twitter is great for staying up on the latest. A perfect example was just this week. HTC announced they were going to release Android 2.2 for my HTC Evo. Since I was following them on Twitter I knew before many of my colleges that the update was going to push later that week. So follow the companies whose products you own or interest you. You can follow your favorite YouTuber’s to get witty updates and humor straight to your feed. If you’re a business then follow your competition! It’ll keep you in the loop with they are doing to better themselves and give you a heads up.
Twitters really a light weight and fun way to keep in touch. Feel free to drop me a tweet or follow me @LiveBinary.
